Peel Tower was one of two monuments erected in the memory of Sir Robert Peel, Prime Minister of Britain 1841-1846, founder of the modern Police Force and repealer of the Corn Laws. He was born in Bury in 1788, the other monument can be found in Market Place in the centre of Bury. The Tower cost £1,000 to erect and the money was raised through public appeal.
Today the Tower offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, after climbing the staircase to the top you can sometimes see as far as Blackpool and Wales. Volunteers open the Tower at least once a month and a small charge made for entry. Other requests have been made for abseil opportunities as well as a quirky place to propose. Contact Bury Tourist Information Centre for more information 0161 253 5111.
