Town of Culture

Bury Town of Culture 2021

Bury the home to many great icons – Danny Boyle, Elbow and of course the great Victoria Wood so there was no wonder the town was chosen as the first Greater Manchester Town of Culture. The accolade should have been for 2020 but sadly due to the Coronavirus pandemic plans were put on hold until this year.

So in 2021, Bury will officially have the accolade of the Greater Manchester Town of Culture. As part of its status there will be a special programme of events (COVID permitting) that will take place throughout the year to inspire creativity and encourage local people to take part in cultural events including festivals, family days out, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and local heritage.

Visit What’s on for more information about events taking place throughout the year.

Central to the programme of events will be Happy – an arts programme with a festival at its heart. Happy is inspired by the legacy of Bury-born Victoria Wood, her work and how she made audiences feel when she performed. Happy is all about people being able to experience for themselves the kind of work Victoria made including comedy writing, stand up, songwriting, performance and musical virtuosity. Above all Happy aims to make people laugh!
