Bury Town of Culture - Open Day

To celebrate our year as the Greater Manchester Town of Culture, Burys cultural venues are opening their doors to showcase what they have to offer. The open day on Saturday 31st July will provide residents and visitors with a unique opportunity to experience Burys cultural offer and see what really goes on behind the scenes at some of our theatres, museums, galleries and visitor attractions. You can also enjoy live music or enjoy the sights and sounds on guided walks.

All events are FREE and the following venues will be taking part on the day:

  • Bury Transport Museum - Explore the 1940's collection and object handling sessions. Discover what life was like in 1940's and how did the people of Bury stay safe from enemy attack? Drop in sessions available at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm - each session lasts approx 40 minutes.
  • Bury Art Museum – Themed tours to highlight two exhibition Spirit of Place and The Walker Family: Portraiture & Place Tour

Spirit of a Place Sketchbook Tour (Taster session)

A unique, lively tour led by Lee Crocker which aims to inspire creativity in artists of all levels and ages whilst exploring the visual delights of the Silver Street area. Please note this is a taster with a full Spirit of a Place drawing session planned for October 9th.

Spirit of a Place Sketchbook Tour Newspaper Launch

10am – 430pm

Limited amount free

A new addition to the Spirit of a Place exhibition is a newspaper that contains a deeper history of the area, examples of old and new architecture and artwork as well as insights into some of the artists approaches. Visit the exhibition on 31st and pick up your copy!

Limited amount free on the day, £2.50 in Bury Art Shop afterwards.

The Walker Family: Portraiture & Place Tour

Join us for this insightful tour of The Walker Family: Portraiture & Place exhibition. We will look at paintings, objects and contemporary artworks that give us an intimate look at the Walker Family and how they represented themselves through portraits and the house where they lived in Bury.

  • Customised gig truck, The Bandwagon will also be making an appearance outside the Drill Hall on Saturday 31st and August 1st from 2pm – 5pm where up and coming Manchester artists will be performing.

  • Roch Valley Radio will also be at Bury Market on the day so pop by and say hello whilst you are out and about!
